It’s not easy to find a decent Kelantanese cuisine KL or PJ area, so I was excited when I found out about Kelantan Delights in Sooka Sentral. They serve authentic Malay cuisine using the freshest and natural ingredients.
If you are looking for some appetizer to kick start your tastebuds, then you can try their Sirih Daun Kaduk. The daun sirih a.k.a betel, was wrapped with fried popiah skin to give it a crunchy texture. Inside the leaf was filled with ginger, chili padi, roasted coconut, roasted peanuts, dried shrimp and home-made sauce. The dish wasn’t too spicy, but just nice to spice up your appetite for the next course. Another dish that I liked was the Nasi Tumpang. The rice would be wrapped in banana leaf, and have different layering of dishes inside. The first layer was filled with shredded egg; the second layer filled with chicken floss and prawn sambal; and the bottom of the rice was gulai ikan tongkol. Nasi Tumpang is a traditional food where the farmers would bring the rice out to the field and have it as their breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were informed that due to the long hours of making the rice, the restaurant could only make less than 20 of these a day.
No meal is complete without a dessert. So, if you are looking for something sweet, I would suggest you to order Lompat Tikam. Interesting name, isnt’ it? It’s made up of pandan rice cake, red glutinous rice with coconut milk and palm sugar. The soft rice cake was pretty tasteless on its own, but perfect when paired with the coconut milk and palm sugar. The red glutinous rice had a chewy and sticky texture but goes very well with the sweetness of the palm sugar. If you are up to something more unique, you could try the Ketupat Sotong – squid stuffed with rice. Personally, the taste was a little bit too unique for my palate. It tasted like squid, except that it was sweet instead of savoury.
All in all, I had a pleasant experience at the restaurant and would really like to drop by again soon. They have 3 branches – KL Sentral, Subang Jaya, and Citta Mall.
